Oh hair extensions, how much I adore thee.
I have been wearing hair extensions on and off since I was 14! I’ve tried glue in, sew in, bead in, clip in, the i-tip beaded individuals, and bonded individuals. Hair can come in wefts (Pictured above) or little individual tiny clusters! It blows my mind how much money I have spent on my hair sometimes, but i cant get enough.
Lately, extensions have been becoming more and more popular amongst women, young and old. We all share that same need and desire: Sexy.Full.Hair.
Extensions are not only added for length. Often times clients come into the salon only wishing to thicken their existing hair with a few extensions. The results are amazing. The confidence and smile on these women as they leave the salon is priceless.
Hair extensions dont have to be bonded to the hair for weeks, they can even be worn for just one night! Pieces and temporary hair additions are an amazing way to create beautiful styles that would otherwise be a struggle.
Wait wait wait before you run off to the hair supply and buy a bundle! There are plenty of risks associated with these faux-locks!
A friend of mine wore clip in hair extensions for 2 years. If you are not familiar with these, it is a weft of hair that has about 2 inch clips spread evenly across. The clips are snapped close to your scalp, and often times the hair must be “teased” to insure a secure no-slip grip.
In that 2 year period, she slept in them (Which is a no no!), tugged on them, and rarely exfoliated her scalp. Gradually, her hair began to fall out, but because she always wore her extensions, she hardly noticed. She often complained of an itchy scalp, and her extensions being “too tight.” One afternoon after removing her extensions, she ran her fingertips through her hair, and felt a completely bald section at the back of her head. The bald patch was about 2 inches wide, and upon further inspection, there were more.
Too much tension on the strands of hair had strained her hair follicles, forcing them to swell. Her scalp also became inflamed because the proper washing techniques were not used. Her extensions were too tight for too long, putting constant strain and stress on her hair! These elements left the hair brittle and fragile, leading her hair to fall out. After seeing a doctor, she was diagnosed with traction alopecia. Her hair eventually grew back, (although it took almost 6 months to even start to show!) it was never really the same. I would consider her to be lucky, actually! Some dont even get ANY hair back!
Its serious stuff, guys.
I can assure you that my friend is not the only one who has had this sort of trauma, and kicked themselves for being silly. A lot of the time people dont know, which is why i am here for you!
If you do chose to get extensions, make sure the stylist doing them is willing to offer you free or extremely inexpensive adjustments and “check ups”, if you will. Let the professional talk to you about the different ways they can be put in, and what would be best for YOUR hair.
My clients know that if they are ever having discomfort attributed to their extensions, I am the first on the scene to make sure I dont end up with a baldy!
Know your stuff, kids! Hair is serious shit, you better BeWeave it!
